Thing23, Thing23

Thing 23

"Explore and Play" for teacher engagement:

Keeping everything hands-on is a great way for teachers to use and learn the technology.

  • Give the teachers a "flipped" activity to complete during a workshop or the night before
  • Create a video on teaching or somewhere fun they went
  • Create a podcast about themselves to introduce to other students/teachers

Thing21, blog_reader

The blog I would like to share is the Cool Cat Teacher Blog.  (coolcatteacher.com)  I chose this blog because of the information that is provided and the way it is organized.  There is information on the blog about teaching, inspiration, personal development, tech tips, and more.  The blog also provides links out to other sources.  It also has a section for beginners and Podcasts.

The appearance of the blog is very clean.  It is a very basic design.  Some of the blogs I visited almost looked like one long advertisement and it was difficult for me to focus on a topic and read the information.

The site also offers an email update that you can sign up for to receive items on a regular basis.

Thing20, CreativeCommons

The project that I chose was about sound waves.  I am working with one of the 6th grade science teachers on a visual vocabulary activity.  She is working on sound waves.  This project comes from the OER Commons.

This is a great lesson for seeing the waves and how interference affects the waves.

Ways to use Skype at school

  • Professionally:  I would encourage teachers to Skype with a parent that was unable to attend a conference.  Right before conferences a teacher was telling me that a parent wanted to meet with the teacher, the parent, and the math tutor for the student.  The parent and tutor were unable to meet at the times available for the teacher during the conference times and during the school day the parent and tutor were unable to attend a conference at school, Skype could be an alternative.
  • Classroom Connection:  One classroom connection could be when two of our 8th grade students attend the Youth and Government Seminar in Charleston, usually in February or March, the students could Skype with the classroom about their trip on a daily basis.  When the students get an opportunity to meet with the Senators and Representatives and have time to talk to them, the class could be connected via Skype to participate in the Round Table discussion.

Thing18, terms

20 Essential Terms for Teachers to Know was added to my webpage to get teaches started on the right track for integrating technology into the classroom.

The list making tool I chose was Wunderlist.  It is very handy to have.  Wunderlist is on my Samsung Tablet, my phone, and my iPad.  They are all synced to my access account and update automatically.  It is very handy to use whichever device is handy to check off or add content.

I tried several different list makers and Wunderlist seemed to be the simplest one that I found.  I also was very happy that I could use each device.  You can set a reminder for a task and repeat if necessary.

It was a bit difficult finding the screenshot on the tablet (power and volume down button, then my files, pictures, screenshots).
